Linda Danaher – BNI Sierra Executives Chapter
October 2010 Feature Article
BNI Nevada Newsletter
By Joan Morrow

Many a movie has been made about the young person who tells her parents, “I want to be an artist.” The parents panic. How will this child make it in the real world? Artists are soft, not prepared for the harsh realities of the workplace. What will become of this child? Well, if that artist is Linda Danaher, she’ll do more than survive; she’ll thrive.

After receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Parsons, The New School for Design, NYC, she was tapped by the Manhattan-based graphic design firm, The Design Source. It was a world of creating logos, designing marketing packages and using her skills as an artist creating illustrations. Combining her training and her innate talent, she moved on to become the Senior Art Director for Bristol-Myers Squibb Company in New York, again combining a talent for business with her artistic aptitude. Then a twist of fate pushed her further, both in physical distance and creative ability.

Many of us hold out for that dream – owning our own business. But work stands in the way. You have the great job, the great income and live in the most vibrant area in the world, New York. One day in December 1993, as usual, you catch the Long Island commuter train to Nassau County. Today is different, though. Colin Ferguson is in your car. Near the end of the commute, he pulls out a semi-automatic weapon and starts shooting. Six people are killed and 19 injured. Linda was one of the victims in what made national news as the Long Island Railroad Massacre.

Linda says, “I had been thinking about starting my own business.” The event led to, “It’s time to start my own business,” and in 1997, she founded Island Communications, her graphic design firm based in Long Island. The move to Nevada came in 2003. For several years, her husband had been traveling to the area producing food and wine festivals, Inside Tahoe TV and Around Reno TV, while she created the promotional materials. She liked to ski, they loved the area, and Danaher Design, LLC was born.

Her experience of working with both national corporations and small businesses gives her perspective. Whatever your marketing needs, she can design an ad or a complete marketing program that helps you brand your business, something that will make you memorable for potential customers. “I know what works, what to do, and how to apply it,” she says. Being an artist, better known as an illustrator in the commercial world, she can create your logo design from scratch, something unique to your business, not a choice you have to make from pre-prepared designs. Tell her what your vision is, and she’ll “sketch it out of her head,” like the client who wanted their own design for Yellow Book. After consultation, she drew a series of award-winning cartoons. “It fit their business perfectly because I knew them and understood their business. Learning about the company is half the battle of branding.”

Danaher Design takes you from an original idea to marketing plan, to material creation, to getting that to the public. It makes sense to have the person who knows your business needs create and manage your entire project.

It’s the same with her BNI group, Sierra Executives. She joined in 2004 after asking her phone installer, “How do you get business?” He answered, “I go through BNI.” Linda says she had never heard of BNI but had tried a networking group in New York. They had been cliquish, not helpful. Sierra Executives was different. “How do you get new business? BNI referrals are an important way. People have a tendency to believe in personal referrals,” she says. “If someone says, here is ‘Jane.’ She’s good at what she does. I’ve used her and am happy with her work, then people trust you.”

If you are interested in expanding your business using the proven method of networking, go to the professionals, BNI. You can contact Linda, presently secretary/treasurer of Sierra Executives, at 775-849-8335. They meet every Tuesday, 7:00 am, Airport Gardens, 1325 Airmotive Way, Room 325, in Reno. If you’re lucky, you may even get to hear one of her poems. She writes personal poems to introduce her group’s presenter of the week. Yes, creating is in her blood.
